What is a domain name worth? Not $2.6M
There’s just something very old fashioned about news that a Maryland man sold the domain “pizza.com” for $2.6 million.
There was a time when this made sense; securing great domains was the order of the day, and if you were Domino’s or Pizza Hut and you were about to launch your online presence, pizza.com would be the best place you could put it. Today… well, it’s nice enough, but $2.6 million nice?
I don’t think that people thinking, “I want a pizza, let’s go to the web and see who delivers” are not typing “pizza.com” into their browsers. They’re typing “pizza delivery” into Google. Or more likely, “Pizza delivery Houston” or “pizza delivery boston beacon hill.” Or, if they have a brand preference, “Papa Johns” or “Dominos.” Or, if they’d rather find a local pizza joint, “italian restaurants DC logan circle” or “pizza syracuse near west side.”
But pizza.com?
I’m quite curious to find out who bought it what they’re plans are… but I suspect they paid way too much.
