Nobody ever did a taste test against RC Cola

Remember those old cola taste test ads, where some underdog drink (like RC Cola) would do a taste test to say, “See! We’re good! We’re really good!” They always did the tests against Coke and Pepsi, not the store brand cola or some other little-known drink. Why? Because they were the ones to beat.*

So I have to think that the people are Apple are grinning when they see this video created by Lenovo, which seems to be going viral.

It’s a good spoof of the MacBook Air envelope ads; not only does it match the original’s tone very well (the music even sounds almost the same), but it also points an advantage of the Lenovo machine: all the stuff you have to plug into a MacBook Air is built in.

(Which, to tell you the truth, isn’t that big a deal, because you don’t use all that stuff all the time, and the Apple machine is pretty clearly built for people who want to settle into their first class seat on the plain, enjoy their scotch, and get a few things done, not people like… well, like me.

If you wanted proof that the definition of “amazingly slim and portable notebook” is Apple’s MacBook Air, this is it. Just as all the remarkably iPhone-like phones popping up (often with more features than the iPhone) tell us that Apple is defining the category.

If someone ever does a spoof like this about you or your product, be very happy.

(Not surprisingly, the comments include the classic Mac/Windows flame war. I’m not sure why everyone doesn’t just die of boredom the minute that argument starts.)

* RC is still talking about taste tests. And remember C&C? They apparently don’t even rate a Wikipedia page but are still in business. I’d link to their web site but it makes loud, annoying noises; Google if you’d like to see it.

Does anybody remember which company had the taste test ads with the names “Coke” and “Pepsi” bleeped out with a little air horn?
